Cyanoacrylate adhesives
Range

One-part cyanoacrylate adhesives

Cyanoacrylate adhesive has a single component: a solvent-free base, usually ethyl cyanoacrylate, with a variable degree of fluidity, which hardens very quickly at room temperature (as a result of air-borne moisture). This adhesive is very strong, which is why it is marketed under the name “superadhesive”.

The viscosity of one-part cyanoacrylate adhesive should be selected to suit the nature of the substrate: for smooth materials (such as metals), a more liquid adhesive should be preferred, whereas a adhesive in gel form is better suited to porous materials (such as ceramics).

  • Low: the viscosity is similar to that of a liquid; used primarily to bond parts already in position, and small surface areas. The bonding occurs as a result of capillary action, with the adhesive penetrating into the tiny cracks and other surface features of the substrates.
  • Average: the viscosity is similar to that of olive oil; for general applications.
  • High: the viscosity is similar to that of liquid honey; for irregular or porous surfaces.
  • Gel: can adhere to most substrates (metals, wood, leather, paper, etc.) and especially to irregular and porous surfaces (porcelain, ceramic, etc.) and can fill significant gaps between the substrates.
