3 examples of materials with complex properties created using ADDEV Materials processes

One of Addev Materials’ specialties is the development of multi-materials combining complex properties. This allows it to meet all kinds of specifications for customers from all industries. Below are three examples.

 

  1. Lamination of identification documents

 

When it comes to creating secure documents or banknotes, the use of paper is not enough. The paper used must also be resistant, tear-proof and tamper-proof.

 

The solution proposed by Addev Materials

 

  • A cellulose layer for simplified bonding on a cellulose or cardboard type medium;
  • A PET layer to reinforce the medium and make it tear-resistant;
  • Addition of a coating of heat-activated glue;

 

Why not use UV glue ?

 

The materials are UV opaque and the customer’s process does not include UV lamps, which is why UV-activated adhesives are not used.

 

UV bonding is a process that is used when the media to be bonded are transparent. Otherwise, heat-activated adhesives are recommended.

 

Heat-activated adhesive selection criteria

 

The selection of a heat-activated adhesive is based on two criteria:

 

  • Its cross-linking temperature

 

The adhesive chosen must have a cross-linking temperature that does not damage the other layers of material.

 

  • The customer’s adhesive application process

 

Glue films can be applied in two different ways. Either the glues are applied by rolls, as in the lamination process, or they are applied by a press.

 

Press bonding allows the use of different adhesive chemistries, which are slightly more efficient in terms of adhesion. Longer pressure maintenance optimizes the chemical reaction.

 

On the other hand, lamination requires glue chemistries that allow increased fluidity at low temperatures and contain polymers that flow rapidly while providing sufficient adhesion.

 

  1. Electronic application

 

The objective in this case is to laminate a complex to a certain temperature in order to encapsulate and protect an electronic product. The customer must be able to apply the material on the product himself. The complex obtained must also have the following properties:

 

  • moisture barrier;
  • oxygen barrier;
  • UV barrier;

 

The solution proposed by Addev Materials

 

Addev Materials proposed the manufacture of a complex composed of the following three layers for this customer:

 

  • a PET film loaded in depth with UV protective components;
  • a coating on the surface of the film that acts as a barrier against humidity and oxygen;
  • an adhesive film;

 

Why not use polyester as a moisture barrier?

 

All polyesters have barrier properties. However, these properties are limited and their tightness will not be perfect since the polymers remain porous at the nanoscale.

For the most demanding specifications, the application of inorganic layers by vacuum processes may be necessary.

 

  1. Film for aeronautical application

 

In this case, Addev Materials was asked to develop a material that meets aeronautical specifications. The requested material must meet the following requirements:

 

  • protect from UV rays and reflect them;
  • be customizable in terms of color;
  • pass smoke and fire tests (no emissions of cloudy fumes).

 

The solution proposed by Addev Materials

 

An assembly composed of three layers of materials was developed by Addev Materials. This material includes:

 

  • a polyester loaded with UV absorbers;
  • metallization;
  • a colored coating;
  • flame retardant glue;
